As a compulsive archivist, I keep all of the assets from every project that I do. However, it’s been 7 years since my first freelance job and I think I can finally trash some of those files.

This exercise has yielded both hilarious and horrifying results–I’ve found business card designs for a wedding boutique, a poster for an a capella concert, a website for a friend’s failed start-up… and it’s all so ugly. The craft is embarrassing! Oy!!

As a final salute to these early .psd’s and .ai’s I will immortalize a select few pieces here, for posterity. Maybe it’s not wise to reveal how much I sucked on my own portfolio website? Oh well, I’ll probably look back at my current work 7 years from now and think it’s just as bad as this stuff.

ONE: The PSAs I can’t believe I got Washington University to approve

My college’s Health Services center hired me to design posters for their campus-wide campaign against binge drinking. The posters were meant to communicate facts about responsible alcohol consumption. LOLZ.

…and one poster that put a positive spin on things (although I don’t think it actually got printed):

I landed a job assisting a woman who did freelance design work for various ad agencies in St. Louis. I mostly helped her with Photoshopping the background out of images for a jewelry website. THREE: The poster that never should have won a contest

Every year Washington University holds a fundraiser called ThurtenE Carnival. Students are asked to submit designs for the advertising materials and, wouldn’t you know it, my entry won. They made my design into posters, pamphlets, and t-shirts (which my dad still owns/wears, thanks dad!) At the time, I was pretty proud of my submission but looking back I am appalled! It’s sooo obvious that I Live Traced that image! And come on, type on a path? That stuff is for babies.

I entered the contest again the following year and did *not* win, even though my submission was way better than the crap I made the year before:

And so it goes. 

The site includes a customized Twitter feed widget and uses parallax scrolling and color-shifting styles. I collaborated on some of the design aspects with Joseph and Kári Emil Helgason.

One of the challenges with this project was that every color in the rainbow was already used to categorize the projects. The rest of the site needed to be almost entirely black/white/gray, while keeping links and buttons looking clickable and avoiding a drab look-and-feel.

Another challenge was that the structure of the website needed to remain the same as last year’s design.

The new site showcases student work and is easy to view/navigate on a smartphone (as that’s what most visitors use to find the schedule and exhibition locations).
